Minimum wage: Yobe workers, business owners condemn strike

Civil servants, the business community and parents in Damaturu, Yobe, condemned the Nigeria Labour Congress warning strike which began on Thursday,  describing it as grossly unnecessary and counterproductive.
A cross section of the respondents, who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria, noted that schools and other public institutions in the state were still providing services in spite of the NLC directive that workers should embark on a warning strike.
Abdullahi Musa, a civil servant, said: “Time has come for the trade unions to be decentralised for every state to face its peculiar problems, to avoid holding the country to ransom of unnecessary strike.
“Some state and local government workers have not been paid salaries for several months, NLC has never intervened but they drag every state into problems affecting federal civil servants; that is gross injustice.

“Similarly, the Academic Staff Union of Universities does not fight for the staff of state-owned universities but pull state universities into affairs of federal-owned universities, it shouldn’t be so.”
Alhaji Bukar Kaku, a businessman, said strikes had always been an exercise in futility, warning that it would affect the economy badly.
“We should concentrate on issues that would promote the economy and not harmful acts,” Kaku said.
Hajara Umar, a mother of five, said the strike would only have negative impact on the lives of the poor.
“We are currently faced with increased cases of cholera and malaria in Yobe, the strike would only worsen the situation.”
Mr Ibrahim Lawan, Yobe NLC Chairman, told NAN that although workers in the state had no pending case with the state government, the union issued the directive for the strike because it was a national issue.
He said the union was wary of peculiarities and challenges of the state and would avoid issues that may spring confrontation.
“The peculiarities and challenges of the state are quite enormous; we have to be considerate, especially in critical areas of health, water supply and others to avoid total collapse that may invite chaos.
“We are looking at how we can manage the situation and we call on government to find a way of resolving the problem, we shouldn’t be talking about industrial action now, especially as we approach the general elections,” Lawan said.

How my sister was stripped and killed after dumping her boyfriend - South African woman reveals

How my sister was stripped and killed after dumping her boyfriend - South African woman reveals
The death of a woman has left her family in pains after she was stripped and murdered for dumping her boyfriend. According to the family of the deceased, the physical abuse on her went on for many years until early this year, when the 45-year-old decided that she was tired of the abuse and dumped him.

She ended up paying with her life for the decision she made. Her family told Daily Sun that Dipuo Makwakwa’s boyfriend would beat her up, strip off her clothes and make her walk home naked.

That seemed to have happened too when her naked body was found in a field last Monday in South Africa. She had been stripped naked, beaten, stabbed and had acid poured on her.

Dipuo’s sister, Dineo (38), from Mohlakeng on the West Rand said her sister didn’t deserve to die like this. She said after Dipuo broke up with her ex, he started stalking her and threatened to kill her.

Dineo said he even came to them, begging Dipuo to take him back. She said the family advised Dipuo to get a protection order, which she duly did.

After hearing about the incident on Monday, the ex-boyfriend’s family hunted him down and handed him over to police. A family representative said: “We couldn’t sit and fold our hands because Dipuo was like our sister too. “We found him at a hostel and took him to the police.”

The Makwakwa family commended the man’s family for what they did.

Dipuo’s brother, Mpho (47), said:-

“We just wish that boy had just forgotten about Dipuo and let her move on with her life. “There was no need to kill her.”

Mpho said they hoped her alleged killer would receive a harsh sentence.

Krugersdorp police spokeswoman Sergeant Tshepiso Mashele confirmed that a suspect was arrested. “A murder case has been opened for investigation. “The suspect is in hospital under police guard after sustaining a burn wound from acid,” said Mashele.

112 abducted Chibok girls sue FG, seek monthly reports on ‎rescue efforts

Ade Adesomoju, Abuja
The remaining 112 abducted Chibok girls still being held by the Boko Haram insurgents have sued the Federal Government along with the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, for allegedly failing to rescue them from the terrorists’ captivity since April 2014.
Their lead counsel, Mrs. Funmi Falana and other lawyers of the Falana & Falana Law firm, had on behalf of the girls, filed the suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/913/2018, before the Federal High Court in Abuja, on September 10, 2018.
The fundamental human rights enforcement suit sought, among others, an order of court mandating the Federal Government to rescue the girls.
The suit which did not pray for any monetary damages or compensation also sought an order compelling the government to file a monthly report in the registry of the court on the efforts being made to free the girls.
While the names of the 112 girls were listed as the applicants, the Federal Government and the AGF were named as the respondents.
Mrs. Oby Ezenkwesili, a leader of the Bring Back Our Girls, deposed to the affidavits filed in support of the suit.
The BBOG is a group that has been championing the campaign for the rescue of the Chibok girls who were originally 276 when they were abducted on April 14, 2014.
